OU Drops Road Battle at Creighton

September 15, 2019 | Soccer

OMAHA, Neb. The Oklahoma soccer team dropped its final non-conference road match of the season to Creighton, 3-1, Sunday afternoon inside Morrison Stadium.

Senior Kristina O'Donnell notched the lone OU goal of the game, her first of the season, in the 61st minute. Off a free kick, sophomore Megan Reilly found freshman Jordan Lund out wide of the 18-yard box. Lund sent a cross into the box, finding O'Donnell who took one touch to send the ball to the far corner and out of reach of Creighton's keeper.

Creighton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals in the 17th and 25th minutes. In the 17th minute, Skylar Heinrich went one-on-one with OU goalkeeper Megan McClay, firing a shot from 12-yards out to take the 1-0 lead. The Jays would add to their lead in the 25th minute on Taryn Jakubowski goal from 15 yards out.

The final Creighton goal of the game came in the 85th minute as Jakubowski once again found the back of the net.

OU had a goal-scoring chance in the 30th minute as senior Ivanna Rivas drew a foul inside the box to set up a penalty kick. Senior Kaylee Dao lined up to take the kick but was denied as the Creighton keeper made a diving save.

"First and foremost, we should take nothing from Creighton as they executed their game plan," head coach Matt Potter said. "We were disappointed to go down (two) goals and ultimately gave ourselves too big of a hole to get out of. Nonetheless, we created numerous chances that you have to finish, especially on the road. We got the goal to put us back in with a chance but lacked the quality and tenacity to close the deal."

The Sooners (4-1-3) outshot the Blue Jays (5-1-0) by a mark of 17-9, with Creighton holding an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Nine Sooners tallied at least one shot, led by four from O'Donnell. Dao added three, while sophomore Megan Reilly, junior Yuuka Kurosaki and sophomore Jazzy Richards recorded two apiece. OU's offense came to life in the second half as the Sooners recorded 12 shots in the final 45 minutes but had just one on goal.

McClay corralled five saves in the match but suffered her first loss of the year, falling to 3-1-1 in goal, while Creighton redshirt sophomore Katie Sullivan improved to 5-1-0 while snagging four saves Sunday afternoon.

"We learn, go back to practice and ready ourselves for the next challenge," Potter said. "It's been a tough road swing with plenty to be positive about and we look forward to playing in front of our home fans."

The Sooners will wrap up the non-conference slate with a pair of home games against SMU and Houston. OU will face SMU on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. before taking on Houston on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 1 p.m.
