NORMAN ā The Oklahoma men's and women's cross country teams will open their 2019 seasons on Saturday at the Hurricane Preview, held at the Mohawk Soccer Complex in Tulsa, Okla.
"I am extremely excited about our team getting this first meet under our belt," said OU interim head cross country coach Tim Langford. "They have truly worked hard coming off of the summer break and into the first few weeks back.Ā I think it will be a good test effort for us.
"This weekend's race will be run on a course that is shorter than normal.Ā The men will run 6,400 meters and the women will run 3,600 meters.Ā The plan this weekend is to simply take a peek at where we are in training.Ā Some of our athletes have a chance at NCAA postseason or the Olympic Trials and will not run in order to preserve their bodies. But we expect a good showing from the Sooner athletes making the trip. Some are seasoned veterans, and others are underclassmen that are ready to show their progress."
The Sooners return a handful of contributors from their 2018 squads and will welcome plenty of fresh faces. In 2018, the women's team earned a sixth-place finish at the Big 12 Championship and 25th-place spot at the NCAA Midwest Regional. On the men's side, OU placed seventh at the Big 12 Championship and took home 20th at regionals a season ago.
Additionally, the Sooners collected one team victory in 2018 and four top-10 finishes. Then-freshman Haley Herberg highlighted the season for OU, qualifying for the NCAA Cross Country Championships and claiming Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honors after an exceptional first-year campaign saw her claim four top-five individual finishes, All-Big 12 Conference honors and All-Region recognition from the USTFCCCA.
No live stats will be available for the Hurricane Preview, but results from the meet will be available on SoonerSports.com following the meet.
