Cross Country Announces 2019 Schedule

August 16, 2019 | Cross Country

NORMAN - University of Oklahoma head track and field/cross country coach Jim VanHootegem announced the 2019 cross country schedule on Wednesday.

The Sooners open their season on Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Tulsa Hurricane Preview in Tulsa, Okla. The team will take a break in the month of September before heading to Fayetteville, Ark., on Oct. 5 for the Chile Pepper Festival.

OU will compete in its final regular season meet on Oct. 19 at the annual NCAA Pre-National Invitational, held at the site of this year's NCAA Championships, Terre Haute, Ind.

Postseason competition begins on Nov. 2 at the Big 12 Championships in Waco, Texas. The Sooners then return to Oklahoma for the NCAA Midwest Regional on Nov. 15 in Stillwater, Okla. The NCAA Championships will wrap up the cross country season on Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind.

"We have a unique mix of veterans and young athletes this season, so that's always fun to see how that dynamic shakes out over the season," said VanHootegem about the 2019 team.

Last season, the Sooners collected one team victory on the year and four top-10 finishes. Then-freshman Haley Herberg highlighted the season for OU, qualifying for nationals and claiming Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honors after an exceptional first year campaign saw her claim four top-five individual , All-Big 12 Conference honors and All-Region recognition from the USTFCCCA.

"Our schedule is set up for us to go to Tulsa, find out where our fitness level is at, then we have a bit of a break competition-wise, to get back into training and for us to use that time to evaluate," VanHootegem continued on the upcoming season. "We start amping things up a little bit more by seeing some good regional competition over at Arkansas, that's a meet that has been around for years and has always been a fun one. We'll obviously see some good competition there and then we'll really find out a lot by going to the pre-national meet.

"We'll get to run the national (championships) course, for anybody who aspires to qualify to that meet and get a chance to see how that course is. In and of itself, that is a top meet with people coming from all over the country. Then, we move in to the postseason and the importance of it. I'm really looking forward to how we adapt to things and how we progress throughout the year."
