Sooners Split for Texas Relays, UCLA

March 26, 2019 | Track and Field

NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma track and field team begins competition Wednesday at the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. Held Wednesday-Saturday at Mike A. Meyers Stadium in Austin, the historic meet will feature over 7,000 student-athletes and more than 200 college/university teams. On Friday, five Sooners will also compete at the UCLA Bob Larsen Distance Carnival in Los Angeles.

The 92nd annual Texas Relays kick off Wednesday with the decathlon and heptathlon. Senior Makayla Stephens is slated to represent the Sooners in the women's heptathlon, while freshman Kristo Simulask will make his outdoor debut in the men's decathlon. The heptathlon begins at 10:30 a.m. (all times Central) with the 100-meter hurdles, while the decathlon gets underway at 11 a.m. with the 100-meter dash.

Competition will continue for the Sooners through Saturday afternoon with the final event of the meet, the women's 4x400-meter relay, scheduled to begin around 4 p.m. CT at the conclusion of the high school relay races.

Notable events on the weekend include redshirt junior Meia Gordon's appearances in the women's shot put and discus throw following her strong start to outdoor season. Gordon has claimed four event titles in the first two weeks of outdoor competition, winning the shot put and discus competitions at both the TCU Invitational and Roadrunner Invitational. Other notable qualifiers include sophomore Papay Glaywulu and junior Roman Mason competing in the men's triple jump, redshirt junior Gabby Kearney in the women's javelin and the men's and women's 4x100 relay teams, who have each notched two victories to begin this outdoor season.

Oklahoma also sends five student-athletes to Los Angeles to compete at the UCLA Bob Larsen Distance Carnival on Friday. Freshman Haley Herberg, senior Sarah Scott, sophomore Ackeen Colley, freshman Luke George and redshirt junior Jacob Janzen are scheduled to run in a variety of distance events on Friday evening. Herberg kicks off the event at 7:30 p.m. CT in the women's 5,000-meter run, while Janzen wraps up the night at 10:45 p.m. in the men's 10,000-meter run.

OU returns to action after a solid start to outdoor competition. The Sooners have collected 22 event victories in the first two meets, highlighted by Gordon's four individual titles. Several Sooners already own some of the top marks nationally in their respective events. Glaywulu holds the best triple jump mark in the nation so far this season with his leap of 53-10.25 (16.41m) from the Roadrunner Invitational on Mar. 21. Mason sits at third nationally with a leap of 52-4.75 (15.97m), and sophomore Garry Williams is fifth at 51-5 (15.67m). Sophomore Essence Thomas (third; women's triple jump), Herberg (fourth; women's 1,500 meters) and Colley (fourth; men's 800 meters) all also sit in the top five nationally in their events.

Live coverage from the Texas Relays will be available through ESPN3 and Longhorn Network on Wednesday from 6:30-8 p.m. (tape delay), Thursday from 4:40-6 p.m. (tape delay) and 6-8 p.m. (live), Friday from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (live) and 5-7 p.m. (live), and Saturday from 1:30-5:30 p.m. (live).
