Podlinksa Champ at Clay Court Classic

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – Marcelina Podinksa captured her first title as a Sooner Sunday as she claimed the crown at the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic.
In the final, unraked Podlinska took out No. 85 Marlee Zein of Florida, 7-5, 6-1.
After a first round bye, Podlinksa's run included a 6-0, 6-2 rout of UCF's Valentina Martin in the round of 16, followed by another upset of a ranked opponent in a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 [4] victory over No. 72 Natalie Novotna (Virginia Tech).
The sophomore defeated Cassie McLay (Appalachian State) 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinal to set up a meeting with Zein.
"I'm just really proud I had the opportunity to play here," said Podlinska. "I've played all my life on clay courts so it's my favorite surface. My opponent was a good player. I'm happy to be here and thankful for my coaches and my teammates"
"I think first set was much tougher. It was quicker from both sides. [The difference] was I was focused every single point and had a tough mentality."
OU's Skyler Miller was also in action in the tournament, advancing to the round of 16. Miller topped Florida's Sydney Berlin 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round. The junior pushed UCF's Nandini Sharma to the brink in the round of 16, but came up just short, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 [9].
In doubles, Miller and Podlinska finished in the quarterfinals. The duo got an 8-4 win over Lanie Van Linge and Bella Lorenzini (Michigan) in the round of 16 before dropping a tightly-contested match in a tiebreaker to Sharma and Domenika Turkovic (UCF), 8-7 (3).
OU concludes fall play next week as Martina Capurro heads to Newport Beach, Calif., for the ITA National Fall Championships.
