Cross Country Collects Big 12 Academic Honors

NORMAN – Thirteen University of Oklahoma cross country team members were named to the 2019 Academic All-Big 12 Cross Country Team, announced Thursday by the conference.
On the women's side, Grace Barber, Elise Boisvert, Alison Hepp, Jordyn Kaplan, Reagan Kappel and Natalie O'Brien earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors. Additionally, Kaplan was recognized as one of 22 Big 12 student-athletes with a 4.00 grade point average. Camilla Broman received All-Big 12 Second Team accolades.
For the men, Ackeen Colley, Andrew Doherty, Jordan Gledhill, Derek King and Heath Warren were named to the All-Big 12 First Team, while Justice Dick was a second-team honoree.
"Being an Academic All-Big 12 honoree is definitely an impressive achievement," said OU associate head XC coach Charmaine Darden. "When you think of a student-athlete, I think that people just think of the glory of it but don't necessarily know how hard it is to wake up very early in the morning to make your body push through a workout after studying all night. Everyday is definitely a full day for a student-athlete and to be able to succeed both on and off the course is definitely a great achievement."
A total of 94 women were named to the women's teams, while 61 men earned honors.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
The Sooners are back in action on Saturday at the Big 12 Cross Country Championship in Waco, Texas.
