OU XC Wraps Up Competition at Notre Dame

NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma cross country teams concluded competition Friday afternoon at the Joe Piane-Notre Dame Invitational on the Burke Golf Course on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.

The Sooners' men's team finished 15th in the five-mile race, finishing in an average time of 25:37 and a total time of 2:08.03. The OU women's squad placed 19th in the 5K competition, finishing in an average time of 18:35 and a total time of 1:32.54.

“The majority of our team got to feel DI-level competition for the first time today, it shook them in a good way,” said OU associate head cross country coach Kevin Ondrasek. “It's a talented group that now knows what it takes to be elite.”

Ondrasek added, “There's no other way to learn than to feel the fire that first time. They're motivated and excited for the season to come, their response to today will be a measure of their character and grit as a collective group.”

Freshman Eric Casarez led the men's squad with a 42nd-place finish in 24:46.1. Senior Jacob Janzen crossed the line 48th in 24:53.4. Junior Heath Warren came in 106th with a time of 25:59.5, while redshirt junior Zach Gentry finished in 26:10.8 to claim 112th. Fellow redshirt junior Andrew Doherty crossed the finish line in 26:13.5 to place 115th. Freshman Luke George claimed 126th and redshirt freshman Derek King finished 134th with respective times of 26:33.5 and 27:18.7.

Freshman Haley Herberg placed 18th to lead the OU women with a time of 17:14.7. Freshman Elise Boisvert finished 101st and senior Morgan Long finished 122nd, with respective times of 18:29.4 and 18:51.7. Freshman Reagan Kappel placed 127th with a time of 18:57.8, while redshirt freshman Khloe Pointer crossed the line in 19:19.9 to place 145th. Freshman Jordyn Kaplan finished 151st in 19:39.3.

The OU cross country teams return to action Oct. 13 at the Texas A&M-Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station, Texas.
