Cross Country Unveils 2018 Schedule

August 16, 2018 | Cross Country

NORMAN- University of Oklahoma head track and field/cross country coach Jim VanHootegem and associate cross country coach Kevin Ondrasek announced the 2018 cross country schedule on Thursday.

"We're going to some top-end meets and the courses are fairly forgiving, but the competiton isn't. That's going to fair well with our young team," Ondrasek said about the 2018 slate.

The Sooners open their season on Sept. 1 at the Hurricane Invitational in Tulsa, Okla. The team heads to Weatherford, Okla., the following week on Sept. 8 for the Western Oklahoma Showcase before traveling to Notre Dame, Ind., for the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on Sept. 28.

OU will compete in its final regular season event at Texas A&M in the Arturo Barrios Invitational on Oct. 13 in College Station, Texas.

Postseason competition begins on Oct. 26 at the Big 12 Championships in Ames, Iowa. The Sooners then head to Peoria, Ill., for the NCAA Midwest Regional on Nov. 9. The NCAA Championships will wrap up the cross country season on Nov. 17 in Madison, Wisc.

Ondrasek continued on the upcoming season, "We're very excited about this season. We're excited with anticipation. That's because the majority of our roster is going to be true freshmen. We're going to have about half of our top seven on the men's side be freshmen and four of our top five on the women's side will be true freshmen, as well.

"We're excited to get them that experience of what it's like to compete at the DI level. The championship-level courses this year like Big 12s and NCAAs are fair courses, so that's going to be a demand on the year. Our big meets are going to be flat and fast."
