Herberg Qualifies for Nationals to Lead OU

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's and women's cross country teams earned 20th and 25th place at the NCAA Midwest Regional, held at Newman Golf Course in Peoria, Ill., on Friday morning.

Freshman Haley Herberg punched her ticket to nationals with a fifth-place finish in the women's 6K as one of the top four individual finishers not on an advancing team.

“Haley did her thing, making it to nationals as a true freshman is a big deal," said Oklahoma associate head cross country coach Kevin Ondrasek said. "Especially for her to qualify in a 34 team region like ours. This had been one of her goals since she started her summer packet back in June, the second part of her goal is to perform well at nationals.”

The women's side started OU's day with a 25th place finish, posting 626 points in the 6K race. Herberg paced the Sooners with the fifth-place finish in 20:26.7 to claim her spot at the national championship next Saturday and collect All-Region honors.

Crossing the finish line 134th (22:29.6) was Elise Boisvert, while Morgan Long claimed 151st (22:37.9). Khloe Pointer earned 165th (22:54.4), Reagan Kappel placed 180th (23:11.1) and Jordyn Kaplan finished 207th (23:48.0).

In the men's 10K, OU scored 572 points to finish 20th. Jacob Janzen earned 71st (32:28.9) in team scoring, followed by Zach Gentry, who placed 92nd (32:46.4). Brendan Taylor took 132nd (33:25.4), Luke George claimed 138th (33:30.6) and Andrew Doherty finished 139th (33:41.2).

Rounding out OU's competitors were Heath Warren (34:13.3) and Derek King (34:54.6), placing 158th and 181st, respectively.

The Sooners conclude their cross country season with one team victory on the year and four top-10 finishes.

Herberg will continue her season next Saturday in Madison, Wis., at the NCAA Championship. The freshman has had an exceptional debut year, compiling four top-five finishes, including claiming All-Big 12 and All-Region honors.
