SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team rallied from an early deficit on the road Sunday to defeat No. 59 UC-Santa Barbara, 4-3, Sunday.
No. 38 Oklahoma went down early after dropping the doubles point. In singles, senior Emma Devine struck first for the Sooners (2-1), winning the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 6-1, to tie the match at 1-1. UCSB (0-3) quickly regained the lead as Stefani Stojic won at the No. 2 line, 6-1, 6-1, over OU's Simran Sethi.
In her first action since last spring for the Sooners, senior Zita Engbroks fell, 6-4, 6-2, on court six to extend the Gauchos lead to 3-1.
The rally by the Sooners began as sophomore Lily Miyazaki cut the UCSB lead down to 3-2, winning at the top of the lineup with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
OU's Mimi Fotopoulos tied the match at 3-3 with a straight-set victory on court five by defeating the Gauchos' Amanda Atanasson, 6-2, 6-4.
Sophomore Christiana Brigante won a marathon match to complete the comeback for the Sooners. After dropping the opening set, Brigante marched back to win the second at the No. 4 spot. In the third and final set, the sophomore picked up an early break of serve and held off UCSB's Jaimee Gilbertson to take the deciding match, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.
“Christie was incredibly clutch today. She did a good job shifting momentum back to her side in the second set,” Oklahoma head coach David Mullins said. ”She regained her composure after letting a 5-1 lead slip to win 7-5. It was a tremendous effort and I am thrilled for her and her teammates.”
The Sooners are back in action on Feb. 6 against Stephen F. Austin at noon in Norman.
