Sooners Dominate Jacks for First Home Win

PhotosNORMAN, Okla. – The No. 37 Oklahoma women's tennis team took its second home match of the season with a 6-1 victory over Stephen F. Austin in Norman on Saturday.
The Sooners (3-1) won the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.
Senior Emma Devine and sophomore Malene Stripp struck first with a 6-2 win over Stephen F. Austin's Dhanielly Quevado and Lauren Hidalgo-Smith. Junior Mimi Fotopoulos and sophomore Christiana Brigante sealed the point with a 6-2 win at the No. 3 line over Valeria Terentyeva and Liza Aginkaya.
Lily Miyazaki put the first singles point on the board for Oklahoma. The sophomore dominated on court one, defeating Denise Maxl 6-0, 6-1 to remain undefeated in singles this season. The second singles win came on court with OU's Malene Stripp beating the Jacks' Aginskaya 6-2, 6-1.
The clinching point came on court three where senior Emma Devine took down SFA's Terentyeva. After exchanging points, Devine ran away with the first set, 6-3. She clinched the match with a 6-1 victory in set two.
With the match in hand, play continued on courts two, four and five. At No. 4 singles, Fotopoulos topped SFA's Hidalgo-Smith for a 6-0, 6-2 win. At the No. 5 spot, sophomore Christiana Brigante beat Vanesa Calvo Pardo in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to put the Sooners up 6-0. Stephen F. Austin's Dhanielly Quevado defeated OU's Simran Sethi 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8) to clinch the Jacks' lone victory of the day.
"We were clinical from start to finish. Simran had a bit of a blip there in the second set and put hereself in a tough position. She was rolling in the first set," OU head coach David Mullins said. "I expected that, but sometimes in a match like this, we can have a tendency to let them drag on longer than they need to. We did what we had to do and go to work on some things in the process."
The Sooners are back in action Saturday, Feb. 13, with the first of two Dallas-area matches. Oklahoma will play at SMU on Saturday and wrap up the weekend at North Texas on Sunday.
