NORMAN - The University of Oklahoma cross country teams are slated to open their seasons on Sept. 1 in Stillwater, Okla. at the OSU Opener. The Sooners will have 18 entries in the race - 12 for the women and six on the men's side.
Of the six Sooner men, four will compete for the first time as Sooner cross country runners. Jacob Goldberg, Matthew Bradford, Brendan Taylor, and Liam Meirow all redshirted their true freshman season, a year ago. Allen Eke will be the only runner with experience as a Sooner as redshirt senior Hunter Heaton competed in track and field last season but did not run in a cross country race.
"We're certainly excited to get the season started officially," said Jason Dunn, associate head coach of cross country. "In the men's group, we're bringing people together from a number of different statuses. It'll be a good time for a lot of our athletes to get varsity experience."
The 5,000-meter men's race is scheduled for an 8:20 a.m. start.
For the women's squad, this meet is an opportunity for many of the young runners to get first-time collegiate and additional experience. OU entries include three sophomores, Madison Heidenberg, Sophia Fernald, and Lauren Gibbs and redshirt sophomores, Lane Maguire and Chloe Peek.
The Sooners also have four women beginning their collegiate campaign with freshmen Alexandria Arndorfer, Grace Barber, Christa Boettiger, and Isabella Rose set to compete.
Juniors Morgan Baulier and Olivia Taylor will provide some leadership for the women's squad in their first competition. The women's 3,000-meter race opens the meet at 8 a.m.
"The women's group certainly has a different feel and is starting to look more like a team," Dunn said. "It's been really nice to see. I like the feel of both groups this early to kick off the season."
Sooner harriers will endure rolling hills and steps on the grass and wood-chip-covered course that is designed to reflect a European-style course. This will be the first time for the Sooners open the cross country season in Stillwater in at least 16 years. The Big 12 Championships will also be hosted in Stillwater so this meet will give the team a sneak peek at the conference course.
"It's a chance to preview the course," Dunn said. "It's a low-key environment that we usually like to start off our season with and this year will be no different."
Other teams competing will be Oklahoma State, Arkansas, and Tulsa. Results of the meet will be posted on okstate.com with a full Sooner recap available on SoonerSports.com.
