TEMPE, Ariz. – A walkoff grand slam by Arizona State's Bethany Kemp handed the No. 4/3 Oklahoma softball team its first loss of the year in an 8-4 setback against the 21st-ranked Sun Devils Sunday at the Littlewood Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
The loss drops OU's record to 9-1 on the season, while the Sun Devils improve to 8-4. OU's 9-0 start to the season was the team's seventh best in program history.
Despite outhitting ASU 8-3, Oklahoma was done in by nine walks issued by the pitching staff and a crucial error in the field.
Like in Saturday's matchup, Arizona State struck first in the contest.
With one out, Abby Spiel bunted back to OU starting pitcher Kelsey Stevens whose throw was wide of first base. The error would prove costly as the next batter, Jennifer Soria, fouled out to left field for what would've been the final out of the inning.
Instead, No. 9 batter Allie Butterfield beat out an infield single hit up the middle to continue the inning and Sierra Rodriguez followed with a three-run home run to center field.
Oklahoma was able to get one of the runs back in the top of the third, thanks in part to an error by Arizona State.
Freshman Kelsey Arnold led off with a grounder to shortstop that was misplayed by Chelsea Gonzales. Two batters later, Arnold moved to second on a passed ball and gained third base when Freshman Nicole Pendley reached on an infield single to third base. A walk to senior Lauren Chamberlain filled the bases for senior Shelby Pendley, who launched a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Sun Devils pushed their lead back to three runs thanks to a sacrifice fly from Haley Steele in the bottom of the fifth.
For the second straight game against ASU, the sixth inning proved to be a big one for the Sooners.
With one out, junior Erin Miller extended her hitting streak to eight games with a single through the right side. Fellow junior Kady Self followed with a chopper off the top of the glove of Haley Steele at third base. Junior Whitney Ellis then ripped her team-leading fifth double of the season to left-center to make it 4-2.
With runners on second and third, senior Callie Parsons grounded to deep shortstop behind third base. She was thrown out at first by Gonzales, but it enabled Self to score from third to trim the lead to 4-3. Two pitches later, Arnold dropped a single into left field to tie the game at 4-4.
The sixth inning rally was the latest example of Oklahoma's ability to answer their opposition. In the nine instances this season in which OU has had at-bats after the opposing team has scored, the Sooners have responded with runs of their own on seven occasions.
After a scoreless bottom of the sixth and top of the seventh, ASU ended the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Butterfield led off with a walk and moved to second on a groundout and third on another groundout. Oklahoma then opted to intentionally walk Steele and Amber Freeman, the No. 3 and 4 hitters for ASU. As the Sooners looking for the force out at any bag, Kemp instead turned on the first pitch and homered over the fence in left field for the walkoff win.
Oklahoma returns to the field next weekend at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. OU opens with No. 14 Arizona and San Diego State on Thursday before facing No. 10 Georgia and No. 5 Kentucky on Friday. The Sooners then close the weekend with a matchup against Loyola Marymount.
