PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – For the second straight game the No. 4/3 Oklahoma softball team was done in by a walkoff home run by a team from the Grand Canyon State.
After closing last weekend's Littlewood Classic with an 8-4 loss at Arizona State courtesy of a walkoff grand slam, the Sooners (9-2) were bested Thursday by No. 13/10 Arizona, 5-4, on Kellie Fox's solo homer to lead off the bottom of the seventh.
The 1-0 home run by Fox spoiled Oklahoma's four-run rally over the game's final two innings.
Michelle Floyd was cruising through five innings for the Wildcats (10-1), allowing just two hits with three strikeouts and one walk while shutting out the Sooners. In fact, she had retired 10 straight batters entering the sixth, but Arizona made a pitching change and the Sooners capitalized.
Sierra Phillips entered for the Wildcats and got the first out, but senior Lauren Chamberlain got the Sooners on the board with a solo home run to right field. It was her team-best seventh of the season and also the 79th of her career, tying Washington's Kristen Rivera (2002-05) for sixth on the all-time home run list.
Chamberlain is now just 11 away from tying the record of 90 home runs set by UCLA's Stacey Nuveman.
Senior Shelby Pendley followed Chamberlain with a bunt single, moved up to second on a wild pitch and took third when junior Erin Miller hit a squibbler up the third base line to extend her career best hitting streak to nine games. Fellow junior Kady Self came up next and lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to trim the lead to 4-2.
In the seventh, the Sooners found themselves down to their final out as freshman Kelsey Arnold stood on first with two outs. But on a 2-1 pitch, freshman Nicole Pendley pulled a 2-1 pitch over the fence in right field to tie the game.
The tie would not last long, however, as it took Fox just two pitches to send the Sooners to their first back-to-back losses since being swept in a doubleheader at Louisiana Lafayette on March 15 of last season.
After two scoreless innings, Arizona used a two-out rally to grab the lead.
OU starter Paige Parker got a strikeout and popout, but Chelesa Suitos picked up the first hit for the Wildcats as she beat out an infield single to shortstop. Fox batted next and dropped a ball just beyond first base that ended up as an RBI triple. Chelsea Goodacre followed with a double down the right field line, and Arizona had its 2-0 lead.
Arizona doubled its lead in the fifth, as it again scored both runs with two outs.
Fox hit a two-out single to right field and moved up to second on a fielding error by Miller. After a walk to Goodacre, Parker throw wildly to first on a comebacker by Katiyana Mauga, which enabled Fox to score. Mo Mercado then sent a chopper to senior Jessica Vest at second base, but the ball took an unfortunate hop on Vest and allowed the fourth UA runner to score.
