OU/XC Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

NORMAN - Led by redshirt senior Brandon Doughty, a four-time honoree, and three student-athletes who earned 4.00 grade point averages, a total of 13 Sooners from the men's and women's cross country teams were named to the Big 12 All-Academic cross country team Tuesday. The honorees were announced by the Big 12 Conference office.

Graduate student Zac Randall and sophomores Sophia Fernald and Belle Wallace received special recognition for earning 4.00 GPAs.

Eight Sooners earned first-team honors. To qualify for the first team, student-athletes had to earn a minimum of a 3.20 grade point average. Three Sooners received second-team honors, which required a minimum GPA of 3.00.

In addition to the 4.00 honoree, first-team selections for the OU men included Eric Alldritt, Doughty, Will Hogston, and Liam Meirow. Redshirt senior Dan Schubert earned second-team honors.

The women's team tallied another five selections as junior Bryce Perry joined the first-team honorees, her second time to earn conference academic honors. Perry also earned all-conference academic recognition in 2014.

Juniors Elena Arriaza and Brittany Tretbar, along with sophomores Sarah Scott and Abbey Mace, were selected to the second team. This is the second academic conference honor for Arriaza in cross country.

In addition to the GPA requirements, either cumulative or the previous two semesters, student-athletes must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests or compete in the Big 12 Championship. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

The announcement comes after the Sooner men finished 15th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships Saturday. It was their first appearance at the national meet since 2012. The women did not qualify for the national meet, but finished seventh at the NCAA Midwest Regional, the best finish since 2007.
