Wisconsin adidas Invitational

October 16, 2015 | Cross Country
NORMAN - Jacob Burcham and Brandon Doughty used top-15 finishes to lead the Sooners at the highly competitive Wisconsin adidas Invitational in Madison on Friday. OU finished 22nd in team scoring out of the 36 teams that participated in the 8K championship division. A junior, Burcham ran a 23:47.5 - ahead of more than 230 harriers - to finish 11th. Doughty, a redshirt senior, finished with a 23:48.5, just behind Burcham in 12th.
"We had two guys run very well up front," said Jason Dunn, associate head coach of cross country. "It would've been nice to capitalize on those performances. Brandon and Jacob did very well against a tough field."
By comparison, Burcham finished 108th with a 24:43 in 2014 at this meet while Doughty finished 39th with a 24:15.
Three of the five Sooner runners who earned counted scores placed in the top half of the 244-runner field. Junior Dylan Blankenbaker placed 76th with a time of 24:18.6 in one of the most competitive fields Oklahoma has faced this season
"Dylan had a strong race, but it takes five to run well in cross country and we didn't have that today," Dunn said. "It's a very competitive meet, but that's what we'll have to face coming up."
Oklahoma, ranked 21st nationally, went into the meet as one of 16 teams, including 11th-ranked and host Wisconsin, ranked in the United States Track and Field & Cross Country Association's top 30 poll. While the Sooners finished ahead of three other ranked teams, No. 19 Mississippi, No. 27 Princeton and Big 12 rival No. 26 Iowa State, they were not satisfied with the overall team performance.

Jacob Burcham leads for the Sooners as the harriers round a turn on the Wisconsin adidas Invitational course on Friday, Oct. 16.
"We weren't pleased with the team result. The rankings still don't mean that much at this point in the season," Dunn said. "Feeling like we didn't perform up to our level, we certainly will be motivated -- not that we needed much more motivation.
"We feel like we can run a lot better in two weeks (at the Big 12) and that's been our focus all year," he added.
Other Sooner competitors who finished the race were Will Hogston, Liam Meirow, and Zac Randall. Hogston placed 190th (25:02.5), Meirow finished 208th (25:18.6), and Randall was 243rd (26:45.9). Hogston also improved his time from a year ago (25:09).
OU also had three entries in the open 8K race on Friday. Allen Eke finished 22nd (25:07.7), Hunter Heaton placed 38th (25:40.5), and Alonzo Chavez finished 47th (25:58.8), respectively. Eke ran in the 2014 open event in Madison and recorded a 26:39 to finish 70th.
The Sooner men return to competition in two weeks in Stillwater, Okla., at the Big 12 Conference Championships on Oct. 31. In the first and only split competition weekend of the season, the OU women compete at the Pre-National Invitational in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday.
