Five Named Academic All-Big 12

NORMAN, Okla. – Five members of the University of Oklahoma men's and women's cross country teams were named to the 2013 Academic All-Big 12 Cross Country Team, the conference announced Wednesday afternoon.

Hilary Krein (Accounting), Patrick Gomez (Film and Video Studies), Brandon Doughty (Multidisciplinary Studies) and Dan Schubert (Health and Exercise Science) all earned first-team honors, while Eric Graf was named to the second team (Health and Exercise Science).

This is Gomez's third time being selected to the first team and second consecutive. Krein and Doughty make their second appearance on the first team, Doughty's second consecutive.

This is Schubert's first time to earn first-team honors, after earning a spot on the second team in 2012 as a redshirt freshman.

A total of 37 men's student-athletes were honored, 26 on the first team and 11 on the second team. Of the 62 honored on the women's team, 55 earned first-team recognition, while seven individuals were on the second team. In total, 81 individuals earned a spot on the first, and 18 were named to the second team.

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

The Big 12 Cross Country Championships is Saturday in Waco, Texas. The event begins with the men's race at 10 a.m. CT followed by the women's at 11 a.m. CT. The top men's and women's teams are crowned league champion while the top 15 individuals in each race are named all-conference.
