XC Garners Top-5 Preseason Ranking

NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma men's cross country program begins the 2012 season ranked fourth in the nation with 299 votes -- the highest preseason ranking in program history -- and second in the Midwest Region for the second consecutive year, announced the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) Tuesday morning from its New Orleans, La., office.

The Oklahoma men's squad is coming off yet another successful season that saw the team finish sixth at the NCAA Championships, second at the NCAA Midwest Regional and second at the Big 12 Championship.

2012 Oklahoma Cross Country Schedule

OU returns six seniors in Riley Masters, Patrick Casey, Kevin Williams, Patrick Gomez, Frezer Legesse and 2011 All-American Bill Kogel. Returning sophomores Ryan Poland and Daniel Nicolls, as well as Williams, Gomez, Legesse and Kogel, earned All-Big 12 honors last season.

Three freshmen -- Dan Schubert, Daniel Mazar and Brandon Doughty -- and sophomore Malcolm Wankel complete the 2012 roster.

The 2012 cross country season begins this Saturday, Sept. 1, in Tulsa, Okla., at the Hurricane Cross Country Festival.
