PUNTA UMBRIA, Spain -- Oklahoma's Ryan Poland finished 56th overall at the IAAF World Junior Cross Country Championships Sunday in Punta Umbria, Spain. The freshman from Denver helped the United States squad to an eighth-place finish as he clocked an 8,000-meter time of 25:12, a six-second improvement off his 8K time at the U.S. Junior Cross Country Championships.
Poland was fifth among the American runners as Craig Lutz led the U.S. squad with a 29th-place finish in a time of 24:02. Kenya's Geoffrey Kipsang Kamworor won th event with a time of 22:21.
Poland is the first ever Oklahoma runner to represent the U.S. in an international cross country competition. The 2009 Colorado 3A Cross Country state champion, Poland redshirted as a member of the 2010 Oklahoma Cross Country team.
