NORMAN, Okla.--University of Oklahoma cross country head coach Martin Smith was named the recipient of the Roy Griak Award as the 2010 Midwest Region Cross Country Coach of the Year by the U.S Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Wednesday.
This season under Smith the No. 6 OU men won their first NCAA Midwest Regional title in program history, defeating then- No. 1 Oklahoma State 43-50. All five scoring runners earned All-Midwest Region honors as they all placed in the top 15, including three in the top 10. Oklahoma also won the white-division race at Pre-Nationals in October, earning a ranking of No. 5, its highest during the season. In his sixth year as the head coach at Oklahoma, Smith now has four coaching honors in Norman having been named the Big 12 Men's Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year and the Midwest Region Men's Head Coach of the Year in both 2007 and 2010. The Roy Griak Award is the first cross country award for Smith while at OU.
