Big 12 Championships Await Cross Country

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma cross country program stays in the state as it competes in the 2010 Big 12 Championships this Saturday in Stillwater, Okla., on the OSU Cross Country Course. The top team in each race will be crowned the Big 12 Champions and the top 15 runners in each will be named to the All-Big 12 team.
The No. 5-ranked OU men's team competes at 11 a.m. CT in the 8,000 meter race. The field consists of three teams ranked in top 10 nationally according to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), including No. 2 Oklahoma State and No. 9 Colorado.
Possible competitors for the OU men are Rob Sorrell, Kevin Schwab, Bill Kogel, Kevin Williams, George Alex, Jacob Boone, Patrick Gomez, Scott Cooper, Eric Harasyn, Alex Muntefering and Aaron Sherf.
Previously ranked No. 16 in the country, Oklahoma rose to No. 5 nationally after winning the Pre-Nationals race on Oct. 16. The No. 5 ranking marked the first time in school history the men's team has been ranked in the top five.
The OU women compete in the 6,000 meter race at 10 a.m. against four teams ranked in the top 15 nationally, including No. 4 Texas Tech, No. 7 Colorado, No. 11 Iowa State and No. 15 Texas. OU is currently ranked 14th in the Midwest region.
Competing for the OU women is Molly Ferguson, Annie Martin, Kelly Waters, Hilary Krein, Natalie Crain and Kelsey Brown,
The women have finished in the top 10 in every meet this season, including two top-five finishes.
At the 2009 Big 12 Championships, the men's team placed third, their highest finish as a team, and the women finished 12th. Three runners for the men earned All-Big 12 honors with Schwab finishing sixth, and Kogel and Sorrell finishing 10th and 11th respectively. Kogel was also named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
