Eleven Named Academic All-Big 12

NORMAN, Okla. – Eleven members of the University of Oklahoma men's and women's cross country teams were named to the 2010 Academic All-Big 12 Cross Country Team announced Tuesday by the Big 12 Conference. All 11, eight men and three women, earned first team honors while Alex Muntefering was honored as one of nine conference athletes with perfect 4.0 grade point averages. Oklahoma and Iowa State led all schools with eight first team selections on the men's side.
Muntefering, who majors in Health and Exercise Science, was joined on the men's team by Jacob Boone, Multidisciplinary Studies major, Scott Cooper, Finance major, Patrick Gomez, undecided on a major, Bill Kogel, Sociology major, Kevin Schwab, Multidisciplinary Studies major, Rob Sorrell, Aviation major, and Kevin Williams, Finance major. For Sorrell, Boone, Williams and Kogel, Tuesday's announcement marked the second consecutive time they were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team with a minimum grade point average of 3.20.
On the women's side, Natalie Crain, a Pre-HES major, Molly Ferguson, an International Business major, and Kelly Waters, a Chemical Engineering major all earned first team honors with Ferguson accomplishing the feat for the second consecutive year.
To qualify for Academic All-Big 12, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Big 12 Cross Country Championships will be hosted by Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla., on Saturday. The event will begin with the women's 6,000-meter race at 10 a.m. followed by the men's 8,000-meter run at 11 a.m.
The top men's and women's teams are crowned league champion while the top 15 individuals in each race are named all-conference.
