NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma Cross Country head coach Martin Smith and Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Programs and Athletic Director Joe Castiglione announced Thursday the schedule for the upcoming 2009 season which includes two in-state competitions.
The Sooners open the season Sept. 5 at the Golden Hurricane Invitational in Tulsa. On Sept. 26, the team will travel to Minneapolis, Minn., to compete in the Roy Griak Invitational.
Oklahoma will then make the short drive to their second in-state competition on Oct. 3 at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla. On Oct. 17, OU will split in its final regular-season weekend of the year, as some athletes head to the Arkansas Chile Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., while a second group heads to Terre Haute, Ind. for Pre-Nationals.
OU opens up the post-season with the Big 12 Championship, set for Oct. 31 in Columbia, Mo. The team will then travel to Springfield, Mo. for the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship scheduled for Nov. 14. The NCAA Championships are set for Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind.
The 2009 men's team will look to debut several young and promising athletes, as all scholarship runners redshirted during the 2008 season.
The Sooner women, led by junior Kelly Waters, will look to improve on its 10th place finish at the Big 12 Championships in 2009. Waters, who finished fifth while claiming All-Big 12 Honors, became the fifth athlete in the last six years of the women's program to qualify for the NCAA National Championships.
