Men's Tennis Stumbles At Washington

Seattle, Wash. -- The Oklahoma men's tennis team stumbled for the first time in their young season falling to the 39th-ranked Washington Huskies 6-1, in the first match of the Great Northwest Shootout on Friday.

The Sooners (2-1) fought hard but the Huskies (5-2) had all the answers Friday evening. The match, which surpassed the four hour mark, was much closer than the score indicated, because three of the six singles games went to a third set.

The Huskies began the match sweeping doubles competition. At the No. 1 spot Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Martin Kildahl of the Huskies defeated senior Sergey Avdeyev and sophomore Ionut Beleleu, 8-2.

Juniors Andrei Daescu and Blake Boswell found themselves up 7-4 at the No. 2 spot, but the duo of Patrik Fischer and Derek Drabble were to much to handle as they forced a tiebreak match, which they won 7-4.The third match of doubles play saw freshman duo George Chanturia and David Pultr fight back down 6-3, only to fall 7-5 to Tobi Obenaus and Brad Bator.

Following doubles play the Sooners looked to rally in singles competition, but the Huskies were just too much. Daescu, No. 44 nationally, competed at the No. 1 spot against the reigning Pac-10 Player of the Week Nedunchezhiyan. After winning the first match 6-4, Daescu lost the last two matches 4-6, 2-6.

At the No. 2 spot Avdeyev defeated Fischer 7-6 in the first match only to drop the next 2-6, 5-7. Pultr faced Kildahl at the No. 3 spot, but lost both sets 4-6, 5-7.

Beleleu was the only Sooner able to gain a victory in the dual. Beleleu defeated Drabble 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot. Following the lone victory Boswell fell to Obenaus 6-7, 6-3, 6-7. Competing at the No. 6 spot saw the Huskies Chu defeat Chanturia 6-3, 6-3.

The Great Northwest Shootout is a round robin tournament between the Sooners, Huskies and Boise State. The Sooners face Boise State Saturday at 2 p.m. inside the Nordstrom indoor.
