Seattle, Wash. -- The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team (2-2) was dealt their second loss of the season at the hands of Boise State University (4-3), 4-3. This was OU's second game in of the Great Northwest Shootout, hosted by the University of Washington.
The No. 30-ranked Broncos are the highest ranked opponent the Sooners, ranked No. 71, have faced this season. In their first game of the tournament the Sooners lost to No. 39 Washington, 6-1.
OU fell behind early losing two of the three matches in doubles competition. Senior Sergey Avdeyev teamed with sophomore Ionut Beleleu to handily defeat Kean Feeder and James Meredith, 8-4, at the No. 1 spot. Following that match juniors Andrei Daescu and Blake Boswell fell just short to Clandy Shields and Stanley Sarapanich losing 6-8. Sooners David Pultr and George Changuria, both freshman, gave their all in a losing effort falling 7-9 to Blane Shields and Walsh of the Broncos.
The Sooners fought hard and tried to rally in singles competition, but were unsuccessful as their top three spots went down. The No. 1 spot was claimed by No. 44-ranked Daescu who fell 6-0, 6-1 to No. 22-ranked C. Shields of Boise. Avdeyev, No. 76 nationally, held the No. 2 spot, but fell in three sets to No. 90-ranked Feeder, 2-6, 7-5, 3-6. Beleleu was the only Sooner to claim a win during yesterdays game against the University of Washington; however, that luck ran cold against the Broncos as Beleleu fell 4-6, 3-6 to Meredith.
The bottom three faired well for the Sooners as Pultr handily defeated Hodel, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 4 spot. Chanturia fell behind in his first set against Boise's No. 85-ranked Sarapanich, 5-7, but rallied in the next two sets, 7-5, 7-5, to claim the victory. Boswell continued his steady play for the Sooners at the No. 6 spot defeating B. Shields 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.
The Sooners will break-in their newly finished indoor tennis pavilion, known as the Gregg Wadley indoor tennis pavilion, Thursday, Feb. 12, when OU plays host to No. 12 Tulsa.
