Men's Tennis Upsets No. 34 TCU

Norman, Okla. -- The Oklahoma men's tennis team (3-2) opened the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion in grand fashion defeating TCU (1-3) 5-2.

"I'm very proud of the guys tonight," OU head coach Paul Lockwood said. "We had a great win over a very strong TCU team who is ranked in the top 35 in the nation."

The Sooners began the dual by taking the doubles point. Senior Sergey Avdeyev teamed with sophomore Ionut Beleleu to defeat Kriegler Brink and Chris Price of TCU, 8-4, at the No. 1 spot.

Junior Andrei Daescu pared with freshman George Chanturia at the No. 2 position, but came up short to Horned Frogs Emmanuel Brighiu and Adrian Simon, 8-7.

At the No. 3 spot freshman David Pultr and junior Blake Boswell united to defeat Slah Mbarek and Jack Seider, 8-5.

The Sooners continued to role in singles competition. At the No. 1 spot Brighiu of TCU proved to be to much for Avdeyev as the Horned Frog won 6-4, 6-4. After losing his first set 6-7, Daescu came back to defeat Brink 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot for the Sooners.

At the No. 3 spot Ionut Beleleu won his first set 2-6, but dropped the next two 6-2, 6-4 to TCU's Mbarek. Competing at the No. 4 spot Chanturia handily defeated Simon of TCU 6-3, 6-7.

Boswell gave the Sooners the victory with his defeat of Price 6-3, 6-4. At the No. 5 spot Pultr defeated Nichols 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (7).

"I can't think of a better way to kickoff the new Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion," Lockwood said. "I was real proud of them and now we have to get ready for Pacific on Monday."

Oklahoma will host Pacific University inside the Gregg Wadley Tennis Pavilion on Monday, Feb. 16, at 12 p.m.
