NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma's men's and women's cross country teams will partake in the 2008 Big 12 Cross Country Championships in Ames, Iowa, this Saturday, Nov. 1, on the campus of Iowa State University.
The championships will lead off with the women's 6,000-meter run at 10 a.m. (CST), followed by the men's 8,000-meter event at 11 a.m. at the Iowa State Cross Country Course. Following the events the top men's and women's teams will be named league champions, while the top 15 individual finishers in each race receive All-Big 12 honors.
The Sooner women finished 14th in the final event of the regular season, the Chili Pepper Invitational on Oct. 18. Sophomore Kelly Waters led the way with a 12th-place finish, while sophomore Jessica Engel recorded a top-30 finish for the second meet in a row.
Waters and the Sooner women are looking to replicate their performance in the season opener, at the Hurricane Festival, where they had a trio of top-10 finishers. Waters finished first followed by junior Lauren Watson in fourth and sophomore Lindsay Pierson in eighth.
Other Sooner women competing this weekend include Amanda Mayfield and Chelsea Jones.
Colorado has dominated the Big 12 cross country scene the past 12 seasons. The men have won every title while the women have won 11 of the 12 championships with Kansas State claiming the crown in 1998.
Complete results and a full recap of the Big 12 Championships will be available on SoonerSports.com shortly after the events conclusion.
