NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's and women's cross country teams both placed third at the Golden Hurricane Invitational in Tulsa, Okla., Saturday morning.
Squads from host University of Tulsa swept the competition, scoring 27 points in the women's race and 37 in the men's, narrowly edging Missouri State for the win in both races.
Missouri State's Kristin Wolkey won the women's individual title, pacing the two-mile course in 11 minutes, 19 seconds. Greg Roualt of Tulsa, running unattached, won the men's four-mile race in 19:57. Missouri State's Michael Bresheras was first among the collegians with his second-place time of 20:05.
Jason Penland, who finished sixth in 20:47, was first among the Sooner men. Kristi Cook led the Sooner women by finishing 12th in 12:07, just over six-minute mile pace.
The competition was the first under new cross country/track and field head coach Martin Smith, who wanted his runners to focus on running as a team in the short, sprint race rather than aim for individual success.
The Sooner men finished with 49 points coming from Penland, Blake Culp (Seventh, 20:49), Scott Hollingsworth (12th, 21:16), John Mullholland (13th, 21:19) and Salah Hussein (16th, 21:26).
The OU women scored 79 points from Cook, Andrea Bonner (14th, 12:09), Aja Clark (15th, 12:09), Nicola Maye (21st, 12:24) and Brooke Edsall (27th, 12:48).
The Sooner pacesetters agreed that the day's goals were achieved and that OU can look forward to improving in the future.
“It is really good to come out and be able to show what you have been practicing as a team,” Penland said. “It is the first meet of the season. We had a strategy and I think we executed it pretty well.”
“I am not used to sprinting, but I had a strategy,” Cook commented. “I think we executed our strategy well. We set a good benchmark to start from and to improve each week.”
