Velicka, Planck Advance to Round of 16 in ITA Central Regional

TULSA, Okla. Junior Marek Velicka and true freshman Cale Planck advanced through two rounds of the main draw singles in the Wilson/ITA Men's Central Regional on Friday at the Michael D. Case Center in Tulsa.

In the round of 64, Velicka defeated Southern Illinois' Andrey Bubnov, 6-1, 6-2. Velicka continued his streak in the round of 32 where he downed Yohann Nograbat of Illinois State, 7-6(5), 6-1. Planck pulled a, 6-4, 6-4, upset over No. 11 seed Jerry Posh of Nebraska in the round of 64 and went on to a, 6-2, 6-2, victory over Drake's Ivan Mendoza in the round of 32.

Velicka and Planck will face off against each other in round of 16, beginning Saturday morning.

Seniors Tommy Garrison, Lee Gregg and Alexei Ivanov and sophomore Ryan Thomas also competed for the Sooners in the main draw singles. Gregg, Ivanov and Thomas advanced to the round of 32 but lost in that round. Garrison dropped a, 6-4, 6-3, decision to Illinois State's Alban Renard in the round of 64, but he moved into the singles backdraw and defeated Missouri State's Nenad Curcic, 6-4, 6-4. Garrison will play again Saturday in the singles backdraw round of 16.

In doubles action, three Sooner teams competed, and two moved on to the round of 16. Garrison and senior Matt Long handily defeated Nebraska's Karl Jones and Jerry Posch, 8-1, while Ivanov and Velicka picked up an 8-3 victory over Jimmy Khougassian and Andrei Nicoara of Arkansas. The only team to be eliminated was Thomas and sophomore Federico Chavvaria, who lost to Missouri State's Nenad Curcic and Jeff Stone, 8-4.
