Sooners Advance at Indoor Championships

TULSA, Okla. In its first outing of the spring season, the University of Oklahoma men's tennis team defeated seventh-seeded Illinois State, 4-2, at the ITA Central Region Team Indoor Championships at the Michael D. Case Center in Tulsa on Saturday.

In singles competition, junior Marek Velicka, ranked No. 23 in the country, dominated Yohann Nograbat in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Also picking up wins for the Sooners were senior Alexei Ivanov, who defeated Alban Renard in straight sets, 7-6, 7-6, and fellow senior Lee Gregg, who upended Alfredo Lagarda, 6-0, 6-2.

The Sooners began doubles action with a strong performance by No. 20 Alexei Ivanov and Marek Velicka, who defeated Nuno Jacinto and Alban Renard, 8-4. Clinching the doubles point for Oklahoma was the duo of sophomore Federico Chavarria and senior Tommy Garrison. The team faced Tim Link and Djordje Uskokovic and took an 8-5 victory.

With the win, the Sooners advance to the semifinals at 8 p.m. tonight, where they will face the winner of the Drake versus Nebraska match scheduled for 2 p.m.
