NORMAN, Okla. The Sooner men took third place today at the Kansas State Wildcat Inviational in Topeka, Kan. The OU women's B-team finished sixth overall.
Sophomore Jason Coleman finished second to Kansas State's Matthew Chesang in the men's 8k race with a career-best time of 25 minutes, 19.1 seconds.
Junior Blake Culp also finished in the top 10 with a career-best 8k run of 25:48.9.
“Jason had a very good effort,” OU head coach Rodney Rothoff said. “He proved a lot to himself today. Blake also ran strong. They both had great efforts.”
Senior Andrew Call (16th, 26:24.6) and sophomore Salah Hussein (19th, 26:28.7) added two more top-25 finishers for the Oklahoma men. Redshirt freshman Jason Penland (27:00.8) rounded out the Sooners five scorers with a 26th-place effort.
“The men gained a wealth of knowledge today,” Rothoff said. “Now we know where we stack up and what we need to do for the rest of the season.”
Perfect weather greeted the runners Saturday morning at the Stateland Cross Country Grounds as the Sooners prepared to begin their 2004 season. However, the course itself would prove to be demanding.
“The course had rough footing,” Rothoff said. “But, it's the course the team will run on in the conference meet so running it provides a good opportunity to gain valuable information.”
In her first race with her new team, sophomore transfer Aja De Clark led the Sooner women in her with a 26th-place run of 23:59.7. Senior team captain Jackie Dubois was next at 40th with a time of 24:36.8. Oklahoma State's Mary Davies won the women's 6k race, running the course in 21:13.4.
“The women got experience on the conference championship course,” Rothoff said. “Today was a wake-up call. The women have to focus on what they want to achieve for the rest of the season.”
Sophomores Andrea Bonner (43rd, 25:04.1), Julie Swagerty (50th, 25:38.4) and senior Emily Leonard (62nd, 28:46) completed the women's starters.
The women's top-three runners, sophomores Jessica Eldridge, Nicola Maye and Catherine Odell, did not race in the meet.
“I kept out the top three,” Rothoff said, “to keep them healthy for the championship portion of the season and to give the other women experience.”
On the men's team, freshman Brayon Brown and senior Aldwyn Sappleton started but did not finish the race.
