August 04, 2004 | Cross Country
NORMAN, Okla. The 2004 Oklahoma Sooners men's and women's cross country schedule was announced today.
The 2004 schedule, while similar to 2003, starts two weeks later on September 11 at Topeka, Kan., to ensure ample time for preparation. This year's schedule provides more opportunities to compete against highly-ranked opponents at more distinguished venues.
The season begins with the Kansas State Wildcat Invitational. The meet is a preview of the Stateland Cross Country Course that will host the 2004 Big 12 Championship on October 30. The event will be used to prepare the Sooners for the conference meet by learning the landscape and the best way to run the course.
September 18, the Sooners visit Joplin, Mo., to run in the 16th Annual Southern Stampede hosted by Missouri Southern State University.
“MSSU puts on a great meet,” Rothoff explained. “It is a fun course with a good environment. It's going to be competitive since there will be a lot of ranked teams.”

The Sooners then split ranks the first weekend in October with the first team going to South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Invitational and the remaining athletes to Stillwater, Okla., for the Cowboy Jamboree.
“The Notre Dame meet will have the most ranked teams we run against at one time,” Rothoff said. “This is our first true test of how we will stack up nationally. It is a fast course and we should see some records broken.”
The following race weekend will see a Friday night dual versus the cross country team from Southern Methodist. The race will take place at Norbuck Park in Dallas the night before the annual Red River Shootout between the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns football teams.
“We will use this meet to train and condition,” Rothoff said. “It is a relay meet and we expect a competitive SMU team.”
The teams will then travel October 16 to Fayetteville, Ark., for the University of Arkansas Chile Pepper Invitational.
“This will be the first 10K for the men,” Rothoff continued, “and, as always, there will be a very competitive field. For the women, it will be a final competitive test versus ranked teams before the start of the championships season.”
The NCAA Midwest Regional will be hosted by Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., on November 13 with the top two teams qualifying for the NCAA National Championships hosted by Indiana State in Terra Haute, Ind., at the Wasbash Valley Family Sports Center.
“The expectations,” Rothoff declared, “are to improve and qualify for the NCAAs. This schedule was formulated to test the athletes and prepare them for the championship portion of the season. We are aiming to improve on last year's Big 12 finishes and we have upgraded our schedule accordingly to provide more competition and challenges.”
