Eldridge Finishes 80th at National Championships

November 22, 2004 | Cross Country

NORMAN, Okla. Jessica Eldridge finished 80th at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., Monday.

Eldridge ran the 6K course at Indiana State University in 21 minutes, 45.1 seconds.

“Obviously we didn't get what we wanted,” OU head coach Rodney Rothoff said, referring to Eldridge's goal of attaining at top-30 finish and All-America status, “but I was pleased she held her composure. The course was very muddy and it was hard for her to get her footing.”

The weather in Terre Haute at start time was 41 degrees and mostly cloudy.

“Jessica was not in a good position at the start,” Rothoff continued, “but she moved through the field very well at the end of the race. Overall, I think she had a pleasant experience.”

At the halfway point, the sophomore was stuck in a large pack, but passed 14 runners in the final part of the course.

“I felt pretty good,” Eldridge said. “I'm excited that I did better than last year. The course was very sloppy and I would have had a much better race had I been able to get out faster at the start. I had a good kick and passed quite a few people after the 4K mark.”

The Broken Arrow, Okla., native finished 180th at the national championships in 2003.

Colorado ran away with the women's team championship, placing three runners in the top 10. The Buffaloes scored 63 points. Duke was second with 144 points, 81 behind Colorado.

“It's great for our conference,” Rothoff said. “Missouri also had a great effort and finished 11th.”

Baylor, the only other Big 12 school to qualify a team, finished 29th out of 31 teams.

Oklahoma did not qualify a team.

Kim Smith of Providence won the national championship with a time of 20:08.5.

Eldridge was only the third Sooner to qualify for the women's cross country national championships as a freshman and sophomore, joining Tove Lutdal (1984 and 1985) and four-time qualifier Kay Gooch (1990-1993).
