NORMAN, Okla.   The University of Oklahoma men's and women's cross country teams travel to Topeka, Kan., Saturday, Oct. 30, for the Big 12 Championships.

The Sooners hope to improve on last year's best-ever Big 12 Conference finishes. In 2003, the Sooner women finished a program-best ninth and the men tied their best-ever result with seventh place.

Leading the Sooner women will be 2003 All-Big 12 runner Jessica Eldridge. Eldridge ran the fourth-fastest 6K time in the Big 12 this season at the Chile Pepper Invitational Oct. 16. Her time of 20 minutes, 56 seconds also broke her own school record.

The Sooner men are led by sophomore Jason Coleman. Coleman has consistently improved with each race this season. Coleman recently broke into the school's record books, running the tenth-fastest 10K in school history at the Chile Pepper Invitational.

It is the second visit to the Topeka this year for the Sooners. Oklahoma opened its season at the Stateland Cross Country Grounds with the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Kansas State University.

At that meet, the Sooner men took third overall led by sophomore Jason Coleman, who finished second in the 8K race. The women's B-team, led by sophomore transfer Aja Clark in her first-ever 6K race for the Sooners, finished sixth overall.

This is the ninth edition of the Big 12 Championships. The University of Colorado has dominated the conference, sweeping every title except for the women's division in 1998. That was won by Kansas State.
