NORMAN, Okla. - The 2002 University of Oklahoma women's cross country team has been named an Academic All-America team by the Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Sooner women received special recognition for posting a team grade point average above a 3.25. All teams with GPAs above 3.25 were named "Team With Distinction."
To be eligible for the award, teams had to have a 3.00 cumulative grade point average and compete in the NCAA Regional Championship.
OU was one of eight Big 12 teams to be recognized and of those, six earned the "With Distinction" designation.
The Sooners placed six women on the 2002 Big 12 Cross Country All-Academic team last fall and all six were named to the first team. Two of those honored received special recognition for earning a 4.00 grade point average in one of the last two semesters, including Amanda Luksetich who had a 4.00 GPA in the spring of 2002 and the fall of 2001.
"We are proud of all of the accomplishments of our student-athletes," said cross country head coach Rodney Rothoff. "The academic performance of our student-athletes has always been a top priority for me. I stress that with our current team and it's always something I emphasize when I am talking to future Sooners. Our department provides the tools and support to make academic success a reality and a priority. This award is an indication that succeeding in the classroom is important to our student-athletes as well."
Rothoff expects the men's team to also earn the award but the announcement of those teams has not been made yet.
