NORMAN, Okla. - A total of 10 University of Oklahoma student-athletes were named to the 2002 Big 12 Cross Country All-Academic team this week. All 10 selections were named to the first team.
Named to the team from the Sooner program were Jason Brown, senior, mechanical engineering, Meridian, Idaho; Jimmy Buchanan, junior, health and sports science, Toronto, Ontario; Andrew Call, sophomore, University College, Norman, Okla.; Darren Hutchins, Choctaw, Okla., mathematics, Choctaw, Okla.; Alaina Dearman, senior, zoology, Dallas, Texas; Jackie Dubois, sophomore, meteorology, Lawrence, Kan.; Sara Justice, junior, health and sports science, Pauls Valley, Okla.; Emily Leonard, sophomore, finance, Plano, Texas; Amanda Luksetich, junior, civil engineering, Houston, Texas; and Kim Thomas, junior, microbiology, McAlester, Okla.
Of the 10 honored, five received special recognition for posting a 4.0 grade point average in the last two semesters. Those receiving special recognition were Brown, who had a 4.0 in spring 2002; Call, who had a 4.0 in fall 2001; Hutchins, who had a 4.0 in fall 2001; Leonard, who had a 4.00 in fall 2001 and spring 2002; and Luksetich,who had a 4.00 in fall 2001 and spring 2002.
This is the first selection to the cross country list for Buchanan, Call, Dubois, Justice and Leonard. It marks the second time for Hutchins, Luksetich and Thomas to earn the honor. It is the third selection for Brown and Dearman.
First-team honorees must have maintained a 3.20 grade point average, either cumulative or over the past two semesters, and have participated in at least 60 percent of a team's competitions. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
The Sooners are in Columbia, Mo., for the seventh annual Big 12 Cross Country Championship, scheduled to be run on Saturday, Nov. 2. The women will compete in a 6k race at 10 a.m. and the men will run an 8k race at 11 a.m.
