November 08, 2000 | Cross Country

Nov. 8, 2000

Norman, Okla. - OU will travel to Waterloo, Iowa, for the NCAA Regional Championship on Saturday, Nov. 11. The University of Northern Iowa will serve as the host school for the 31 women's teams and 29 men's teams participating in the meet.

The races will be run on Irv Warren Golf Course. The women will run an 6,000-meter race and it will start at 11 a.m. The women will run 8,000 meters and their race will begin at 12:15 p.m.

One of the Best
The NCAA Midwest Regional is one of the best in the country. Oklahoma State is currently ranked 13th in the men's NCAA poll and is the top-ranked team in the region. In the women's race, four of the top 25 teams are running in Iowa. They include eighth-ranked Kansas State, 19th-ranked Missouri, 20th-ranked Minnesota and 24th-ranked Texas A&M. The regional also features one women's conference champion (Northern Iowa in the Missouri Valley) and two men's conference champions (Illinois State in the Missouri Valley and Eastern Illinois in the Ohio Valley). The field also features five men's teams and eight women's teams finished among the top three in their respective conference championships.

The Qualifying Process
The top three teams (seven-person squads) automatically qualify from each region. A total of 13 additional teams will be selected on Nov. 13. The first four individuals not associated with the top two teams from each of the nine regionals also qualify for the national championship to be held Nov. 20 at Iowa State University. Two additional individual qualifiers will be selected at large based on the highest nonqualifying finish in regional qualifying meets. All individuals must finish in the top 25 in their region.

Coach Todd Maycumber Says
"We are looking forward to this meet. As a team and as individuals, we were very disappointed in our performance at the conference championship. We look at the meet this weekend as an opportunity to run the competitive races we know we can run.

"We had several runners at the Big XII meet who were running in their first big, end-of-the-season competition. We learned a lot from the race two weeks ago. We are looking at this race as another opportunity to get valuable competitive experience."

Webb, Hussar and Kelly Lead Sooners on Big 12 Academic Team
Stephanie Webb, Corrie Hussar and Jarod Kelly led the nine Sooners named to the Big 12 All-Academic cross country team. Webb, a senior from Bartlesville, has maintained a 4.0 grade point average in mechanical engineering throughout her collegiate career.

Kelly, a sophomore from Portage, Mich., had a 4.0 grade point average last spring in mechanical engineering. Hussar, a senior from Mustang, had a 4.0 in the fall of 1999 and the spring of 2000 in economics.

First-team members had a 3.20 grade point average or better while second-team honorees had a 3.00 to 3.19 grade point average. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher cumulative or for the previous two semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their teams' competitions. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence and senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.

Other Sooners named to the first team included Alaina Dearman, a sophomore zoology major from Dallas, Texas, Sinead Holt, a senior sociology major from Dublin, Ireland, Jason Brown, a sophomore mechanical engineering major from Meridian, Idaho, and Sam Stalcup, a senior zoology major from Ponca City.

Named to the second team were Cecil Rose, a junior accounting major from Missouri City, Texas, and Forrest Walker, a sophomore mechanical engineering major from Jenks, Okla.

The Sooners trailed only Colorado with 11, Iowa State with 10, Oklahoma State with eight in first-team selections with seven. Texas A&M also had seven student-athletes named to the first team. A total of 105 student-athletes were honored by the conference with 81 first-team honorees and 24 second-team honorees.

A total of 15 student-athletes had posted a 4.0 cumulative or in the previous semester. OU and Nebraska led that list with three nominees each with 4.0 grade point averages.

Last Year for the Sooners
The Sooner men finished 17th overall and the women were 15th in last year's NCAA Regional. Results from those runners who competed last and who are OU's roster heading into this year's meet include Brandon Kissack, 33:46 (98th), Cecil Rose, 33:52 (101st), Sam Stalcup, 34:04 (106th), Jason Brown, 36:38 (135th), Corrie Hussar, 18:40 (62nd), Stephanie Webb, 19:37 (122nd).
