NORMAN, Okla. - The Big 12 Conference will host its fourth annual Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships this weekend. The University of Texas A&M will host the event at the TAMU Golf Course in College Station, Texas, on Saturday, Oct. 30.

The women's 5K race is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and will be followed by the men's 8K run at 11 a.m.

"Our women's team has the chance to do extremely well at this meet," said OU Head Coach Todd Maycumber.

The women's team is hoping to improve vastly on its ninth-place finish last year in Lincoln, Neb. "It is a solid group and if each one of them can reach their full potential, this team has a chance to finish strongly."

The men's team has faced much adversity this season with injuries to key personnel, but is still hoping to better its 10th-place finish last year.

"The injuries to Matt Roman and Sam Stalcup have been frustrating but that is something we just have to deal with. This team has performed well under difficult circumstances," said Maycumber.

The defending Big 12 Conference team champions are the Kansas State women and the Colorado men

Overall, the Big 12 has seven teams, six women's and one men's, that rank in the top-25 polls. For the women, Colorado ranks the highest at fourth and Kansas State is a close seventh. Baylor and Texas come in at 15th and 16th respectively. Rounding out the poll are No. 24 Missouri and No. 25 Nebraska.

Fourth-ranked Colorado leads the men's side while Oklahoma State, Missouri and Texas are not ranked but received votes in the latest poll.

"Our conference is an amazing one and is loaded with talent. So both of our teams will need to be at their best if they are going to be successful," said Maycumber.

Harvey, Martinez lead Sooners at Arkansas
The Sooners were in action on Oct. 16 at the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival in Fayetteville, Ark. The Sooner women turned in a strong performance as they finished eighth out of 22 teams with 230 points.

The men's team placed 14th out of 18 teams with 408 points.

Senior Sarah Harvey led the women's team for the first time this season. Harvey finished 35th overall with a 5K time of 19:03.

Running closely behind Harvey were senior Mindy Mizell and junior Corrie Hussar who each clocked times of 19:10.

Leading the men's team for the fourth straight week was sophomore Jimmy Martinez, who placed 76th overall for the Sooners with a career-best 10K time of 33:16. This bested his performance at the Chile Pepper last year when he placed 49th with a time of 33:28.
