Edson Ortiz joined Oklahoma Athletics in June 2024 as an assistant women’s tennis coach.

In his first season with the Sooners, Ortiz  helped guide Julia Garcia Ruiz to All-America honors for the second time in her career, as Ruiz finished the fall season as a national singles finalist. In Oklahoma’s inaugural SEC season, the Sooners posted 20 wins and secured their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth, earning the No. 6 overall seed—the second-highest in program history.

From Chihuahua, México, Ortiz joined the Sooners after serving three seasons as an assistant coach for the Santa Clara men's tennis program where he helped four players attain all-conference honors. Prior to his stint on the Broncos staff, Ortiz worked as a coach for Eagle-Fustar Tennis Academy in Sunnyvale, California, one of the premier tennis academies on the West Coast.


In addition to his coaching duties at Eagle-Fustar, Ortiz also taught at the Nike Tennis Camps over three summers, developing the play of kids aged nine to 18.

Before Eagle-Fustar, Ortiz had a decorated five-year career at the University of Alabama where he was: a three-time All-SEC selection; a two-time SEC Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year (co-Scholar-Athlete in 2020); named four times to the SEC spring academic honor roll; appeared in the 2021 NCAA singles tournament and 2018 NCAA doubles tournament; and was a four-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete.

Ortiz received both his bachelor's degree in kinesiology and a master's degree in hospitality management from Alabama.
