Abbie Herkelman joined Oklahoma Athletics in June 2021 and serves as the Assistant Director of Sports Nutrition.
In this role, she serves as the primary dietitian for men’s and women’s basketball, women’s gymnastics and women’s tennis. Additionally, Herkelman is the lead dietitian for the wellness team, the multidisciplinary eating disorder team. She oversees the graduate, undergraduate and dietetic internship programs and assists in managing administrative operations and duties for Sports Nutrition.
Prior to Oklahoma, Herkelman spent two and a half years at the University of Arkansas from January 2019 to June 2021. While at Arkansas, she served as the primary dietitian for women’s soccer, women’s gymnastics and softball and as an assistant dietitian for football. She played a key role in the execution of nutrition during the COVID-19 pandemic, finding safe and accessible ways to ensure athlete nutrition. Herkelman also oversaw new supplementation protocols, inventory and procurement processes.
Prior to her time with Arkansas, Herkelman was a Sports Nutrition Intern at Kansas State University. She volunteered for over 2 years before earning a promotion to become the program’s first paid intern. Herkelman worked with football nutrition in supplementation protocols, gameday and recovery nutrition, as well as managing fueling stations for all athletic facilites.
Herkelman earned a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and Nutrition from Kansas State and graduated with the outstanding graduating senior award, and earned her Masters of Science in Kinesiology with an exercise concentration from Arkansas. She also earned an Associate of Science from Coffeyville Community College where she played volleyball and was an Academic All American.
Outside of work, Herkelman enjoys cooking, listening to audiobooks and podcasts and spending time with her dog, Rizzo.
