KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Oklahoma volleyball team suffered a four-set loss to No. 19 Tennessee, 11-25, 15-25, 25-21,19-25 Sunday afternoon in the final match of the regular season.
With the loss, the Sooners (15-10, 7-8 SEC) will be the No. 9 seed in the conference tournament. After finishing the year tied with Auburn in league play, the Tigers hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.
The Sooners struggled offensively outside the third set, hitting just .153 to Tennessee's (19-6, 10-5 SEC) .402.
Alexis Shelton reached an impressive milestone in the match as she tallied her 1,500th career kill. Shelton is now only the sixth Sooner to reach the 1,500-kill mark and finished her night with 12 kills, four digs and two blocks.
Alyssa Flack tied her career best with 11 kills on the day, while setting a career high with three aces.
Tennessee took the first set, 25-11. In the second set, the Sooners took an 8-7 lead before a 4-0 Tennessee run made it 11-7. The Volunteers extended their lead with an 8-3 run to force an OU timeout. OU fought off set point, but the deficit was too much to overcome as Tennessee took the set, 25-15.
The Sooners got one back in the third set. OU led 15-12 at the media timeout and pushed the margin to 17-13 before Tennessee used a 5-1 run to even the frame at 18-all. The Sooners responded with a 4-0 burst to go up 22-18, but the Vols answered with three straight to pull within two at 23-21. A kill from Ada Awagu set up set point, and an ace from Flack closed it out as OU took the frame, 25-21.
The Vols took a 7-3 lead in the fourth before the Sooners used a 6-1 run to take a 9-8 lead. Tennessee responded with a 12-4 run to take a 20-13 lead. OU fought off a trio of set points before dropping the set 25-19.
The SEC Tournament begins Friday, Nov. 21, in Savannah, Ga. The full bracket will be announced at the conclusion of Sunday's matches.
