SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Oklahoma volleyball team dropped a heartbreaking five-set match to Auburn in the second round of the Allstate SEC Volleyball Tournament, 25-21, 25-19, 21-25, 23-25, 13-15, Saturday afternoon inside Enmarket Arena. The Sooners dropped to 16-11 on the season while Auburn improved to 17-10.
Alexis Shelton led all players with a season high 27 kills to go with 11 digs for her second double-double of the season, while also chipping in four blocks.
Emoni Bush notched her fourth double-double of the year with 14 kills and 15 digs to go with four blocks. Alyssa Flack notched 11 kills, her fourth-straight match in double-digits.
Avaya Maga tallied her first career 50-assist match, along with her second double-double as she added 12 digs. Tekoa Barnes recorded a career high four service aces.
Behind eight kills from Shelton and a .324 team hitting percentage, the Sooners claimed the opening set, 25-21. Auburn jumped out to a 9-4 lead before OU stormed back to even the frame at 11. The teams traded points until the Sooners led 15-14 at the media timeout. Auburn pulled even again at 18-all, but a kill from Bush immediately pushed OU back in front for an advantage the Sooners held the rest of the way.
Oklahoma took a 2-0 lead with a 25-19 victory in the second set. After falling behind early, the Sooners pulled even at 12-12 thanks to a solo block by Carley Butler. As in the opening frame, OU held a slim 15-14 edge at the media timeout. Auburn knotted the set again at 16-all, but a 6-2 Oklahoma surge pushed the Sooners ahead 22-18. The Tigers briefly halted a 5-0 OU run to fend off set point, but a service error closed out the frame in the Sooners' favor.
Auburn took the third set, 25-21, behind a .481 hitting percentage, while holding OU to just .200. The Sooners fell behind 17-12 and could not overcome the deficit as Auburn forced a fourth set.
In the fourth, OU jumped out to a 6-2 lead before Auburn closed the gap with a 4-1 run to make it 7-6. The Sooners rebuilt their advantage to 12-9 and held a narrow 15-13 lead at the media timeout. Out of the break, the Tigers used a 5-0 run to surge ahead 18-15. OU responded, pulling even at 19-19 and taking a brief 21-20 lead, but Auburn closed the set on a 4-0 run to take it 25-23.
The decisive fifth set was a back-and-forth battle to the finish. OU moved in front 6-4, but a 4-0 Auburn run put the Tigers ahead at the switch. The Sooners regained momentum to take a 10-9 advantage before Auburn knotted the frame at 12-all. OU pulled ahead once more at 13-12, but a final 3-0 run by the Tigers secured the 15-13 set and ended the match.
