NORMAN – Behind a .706 hitting percentage from Kelli Jo Burgess and 15 kills from Alexis Shelton, the Oklahoma volleyball team swept Mississippi State Wednesday night inside McCasland Field House.
The Sooners (14-8, 6-6) picked up their second sweep in conference play with a 25-23, 25-22, 25-20 win over the Bulldogs (15-7, 5-7 SEC).
Burgess hit a season best .706, her second match hitting at least .700 on the season. The redshirt junior notched 12 kills on 17 attempts with no errors to tie her season high in kills. She added five blocks to lead the team, along with one service ace.
Shelton hit .303 as she recorded 15 kills on the night, including the game winner. The senior also added four digs and two blocks.
Emoni Bush inched closer to 1,000 career kills with seven on the night to bring her total to 995. The senior chipped in 10 digs to go with three service aces and two blocks.
OU hit .429 in the opening frame behind seven kills from Shelton. After jumping out to a commanding 20-11 lead, the Sooners saw their advantage slip away late as a 6-0 run by the Bulldogs tied the match at 22-22. Shelton came up big in clutch time, notching the final two kills to give OU the 25-23 win.
The Sooners prevailed in the second set, 25-22, to go up 2-0 in the match. Despite taking yet another large lead at 15-9, the Sooners found themselves down 21-19 late in the set. A block by Bush and Burgess put OU back in front, 22-21, and back-to-back kills for Burgess made it 24-22. Bush's sixth kill of the night wrapped up the win.
In the final set it was all Sooners as they closed out the match with a 25-15 victory. Up 15-12, the Sooners used a 5-0 run to take their largest lead of the set. An ace from Piper Justiss gave OU set point and Shelton clinched the match with a kill.
The final home game of the regular season is set for Friday at 7 p.m. as the Sooners host Alabama for Senior Night.
