SAVANNAH, Ga. – Behind impressive outings from Alyssa Flack and Alexis Shelton, the Oklahoma volleyball team defeated Arkansas, 3-1, in the first round of the Allstate SEC Volleyball Tournament.
The Sooners (16-10) dropped the first before storming back to defeat Arkansas (5-22), 18-25, 25-17, 25-12, 25-20, for their first tournament victory in program history.
Flack continued her strong offensive showings with her third-straight match of double-digit kills. The freshman notched a career best 17 kills, hitting a team and match high .517 on the day. Flack added two service aces and six digs on the day. In the fourth set, Flack hit 1.000 as she was 7-for-7.
For the third year in a row, Shelton reached 400 kills becoming just the fourth in program history to record at least three seasons of 400 kills. The senior tallied 23 kills in the match and 10 digs for her second double-double of the season.
Avaya Maga nearly had her first 50-assist performance, finishing with a career high 49 for her third 40-assist match of the season. Maga also added eight digs to go with two service aces and one block.
Arkansas took the first set, 25-18, as the Razorbacks held the Sooners to just a .075 hitting percentage in the opening frame.
OU bounced back in the second set, hitting .583 with just one attack error after committing 11 in the opening frame. The Sooners held a narrow 15-14 lead at the media timeout before pushing the margin to 21-16 behind a huge solo block from Burgess and an ace from Bush. A closing 6-1 run sealed the set as OU evened the match with a 25-17 victory.
The Sooners controlled the third set from start to finish, rolling to a 25-12 win. A 5-0 run and three early kills from Shelton powered OU to a 7-2 start. Arkansas cut the deficit to 8-6, but a 7-1 surge pushed the Sooners' lead back to eight. OU never let up, closing the frame with a 4-0 run that featured two aces from Shelton to secure the set.
A tightly contested fourth set saw seven ties and four lead changes through the first timeout. OU narrowly led 15-14 at the media break and maintained a tight lead up to 18-16. A 6-2 run set up match point and Bush sealed the victory, 25-20.
The Sooners will face Auburn in the second round of the tournament tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT on SEC Network+.
