Sooners Improve to 2-0 After Sunday Victory

NORMAN – The No. 21 Oklahoma men's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season following a 6-1 victory over Abilene Christian Sunday afternoon at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
The Sooners had a dominant performance in doubles, winning courts two and three to take the doubles point. Five singles wins pushed Oklahoma to the finish line, including the clinching win from freshman Luka Talan Lopatic in his debut for the Sooners.
On court three, Hank Trondson and Asahi Harazaki took a 6-2 win to set court two's Luis Alvarez and Alejandro Melero up for the clincher. Alvarez and Melero won 6-3 to give Oklahoma a 1-0 advantage in the match. Court one's Johan Rodriguez and Orel Kimhi were tied 3-3 when play was stalled.
Rodriguez was first off the court in singles, posting a dominant 6-0, 6-0 score to put the Sooners up 2-0 in the dual.
Melero extended the Sooners' lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win at the five line. The 6'6" sophomore from Spain completed his first singles win of the spring with a match point ace.
Talan Lopatic made his debut for the Sooners and picked up his first collegiate win in Sunday's matchup. He picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the six singles spot to clinch the win for Oklahoma.
Alvarez picked up his second win of the season on court two with a 7-5, 6-2 result to add another point for OU.
Sophomore Oscar Lacides dropped the first set before claiming set two to force a 10-point tiebreak. In the breaker, the France native came up short, 7-10, and Abilene Christian took its first point of the match.
Kimhi was the last Sooner on court and finished the day with a 7-6(4), 7-5 win to complete the match.
UP NEXT
The Sooners head west to take on ITA Kickoff Weekend in Berkeley, Calif. where a spot at the ITA Indoor National Championships is on the line. Oklahoma faces the Cal Golden Bears on Friday, Jan. 23 before playing UCF or USC on Saturday, Jan. 24.
