NORMAN – The No. 12 Oklahoma women's tennis team notched its seventh ranked win of the season Friday night, defeating No. 68 Kentucky, 4-0, at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
The win marked Oklahoma's third consecutive conference victory and its first-ever against Kentucky in the teams' inaugural meeting.
Competing indoors at home for the first time since Feb. 4, Oklahoma (11-3, 4-2 SEC) secured its eighth doubles point of the season to open the match. Kentucky struck first as the No. 87 duo of Elizabeth Stevens and Ellie Eades defeated OU's No. 63 Alina Shcherbinina and Cara Mester, 6-3, on the top court. Shifting momentum in the home team's favor, Salakthip Ounmuang and Chloé Noël responded with a 6-3 win over Asuncion Jadue and Julia Zhu on court two. Ava Catanzarite and Gloriana Nahum clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Zoe Hammond and Ellie Myers at the No. 3 spot. Both OU's No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams improved to 3-0 in dual play.
No. 74 Emma Staker got the singles rally started for the Crimson and Cream with a straight-set victory over Stevens (6-1, 6-3) on court three.
On court five, No. 98 Nahum secured the third point after beating Jadue (6-3, 6-3). The SEC Co-Freshman of the Week is on a five-match singles winning streak.
Making her third start at No. 2 singles and clinching the match for the Sooners, Ounmuang delivered with a 6-3, 6-2, victory over Zhu.
The match played out and gave the remaining three courts a chance to tally another win. Catanzarite was next to take the victory, defeating Tess Bucher 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot. On court six, Noël secured a 6-4, 7-6 (6), win over Myers. To close out the match, the Wildcats would pick up their first and only point at the top court, as No. 101 Hammond knocked off OU's No. 34 Shcherbinina in a third set, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Sooners return to the court on Sunday against No. 8 Tennessee. First serve from the Headington Family Tennis Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT. Fan's attending Sunday's match are encouraged to wear crimson. OU tennis-themed tote bags and crimson poms will be available for free while supplies last.
