NORMAN — University of Oklahoma women's tennis player Salakthip Ounmuang was named Southeastern Conference (SEC) Freshman of the Week on Wednesday following her performance in the Sooners' 4-3 conference-opening win over Arkansas on Saturday.
The weekly honor is the first of Ounmuang's career and the first SEC Freshman of the Week honor in OU women's tennis history.
Holding a 3-2 advantage in the team race, Ounmuang met Arkansas' Anet Koskel and delivered a quick 6-1, 6-3, win to clinch the match and fourth ranked win of the season for the Sooners in their first true road contest against the No. 62 Razorbacks inside the Billingsley Tennis Center. The Bangkok, Thailand, native helped women's tennis become OU's second program to win its SEC conference opener after officially joining the league on July 1, 2024. Splitting time between No. 2 and No. 3 singles, Ounmuang holds a 5-3 dual record this spring.
Ounmuang is represented twice in doubles, slotting in at No. 53 with fellow freshman Gloriana Nahum, and again at No. 83 with sophomore Roisin Gilheany. The dynamic freshmen duo of Ounmuang and Nahum boast a team-leading 6-1 doubles record.
The Sooners will continue SEC play on the road at No. 11 Texas on Friday. First serve against the Longhorns is set for 2 p.m. CT at the Texas Tennis Center.
