Martinez Completes Run at NCAA Singles Championship

NORMAN – Oklahoma fifth-year senior Alex Martinez completed his collegiate tennis career at the NCAA DI Men's Singles Championship Tuesday afternoon.
Martinez, who held a 9-16 seed in the tournament, topped Tulsa's Pierce Rollins in the first round of the tournament on Monday morning. After winning the first set in a tiebreak, Martinez fell short in the second set, sending the match into a third set. Martinez did not drop a game in the third set and secured his spot in the second round with a 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-0 win.
In the round of 32, the Spain native faced Ohio State's JJ Tracy. Martinez dropped his first set, 6-3, before playing to a second-set tiebreaker. Ultimately, Martinez dropped his match 6-3, 7-6(6).
Martinez completes his senior season with four Big 12 Player of the week honors, a Big 12 All-Conference First Team mention and two conference position champion awards. After starting the season with a singles ranking of No. 98, Martinez went 17-3 on the season and picked up nine ranked wins to achieve a career-high singles ranking of No. 7.
