Seven Sooners Combine for Eight All-Big 12 Honors

NORMANĀ - Seven members of the Oklahoma women's tennis teamĀ claimed eight All-Big 12 honors, the conference announced Thursday. Julia Garcia Ruiz, Dana Guzman, Roisin Gilheany, Zdena Safarova, Chloé Noël, Ava Catanzarite and Emma Staker all earned league accolades.Ā 

Garcia Ruiz and Guzman were named to the All-Big 12 first team in singlesĀ after leading the way for the Sooners in Big 12 action. Garcia Ruiz, a rising sophomore out of Morelia, Mexico, finished the season 11-1 between the top two courts while Guzman notched an 8-1 record and is currently riding a nine-match win streak heading into the NCAA Tournament. Adding another accolade, Garcia Ruiz was also named a co-champion at the No. 1 singles position. Ā

Guzman and Roisin Gilheany, currently ranked No. 25 in doubles, wereĀ named to the All-Big 12 first team after going 10-3 overall and 8-2 in conference play at the top court. The No. 32 pair of Garcia RuizĀ and Zdena Safarova were named to the second team in doubles with a 12-1 conference record all at court two.Ā

Noël, who hails from France, arrived in Norman prior to the spring season and quickly made an impact on both the singles and doubles courts. She was named toĀ the all-freshman team while boasting a 9-3 singles record and enters her first NCAA Tournament at 8-3 in doubles with her partner Catanzarite. The team of Noël and CatanzariteĀ were named the All-Big 12 No. 3 doubles position champions.Ā 

Staker, a junior and Tulsa native, was named the No. 6 position co-champion in singles for the second time in her career after posting an impressiveĀ 15-2 overall record and 9-1 conference record. Ā

OU is set to make the program's 14thĀ NCAA tournament appearance on SaturdayĀ as the Sooners open with ArizonaĀ at 10Ā a.m. CT at the College StationĀ Regional.Ā
