NORMAN – Four members of the Oklahoma women's tennis team – Julia Garcia Ruiz, Dana Guzman, Florencia Urrutia and Alina Shcherbinina – will close out the season when they compete in the NCAA individual championships in Stillwater, Okla. this week. Garcia Ruiz, Guzman and Urrutia will start play in the NCAA Singles Championship on Monday while Guzman and Shcherbinina play in the NCAA Doubles Championship starting Tuesday at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
Garcia Ruiz and Guzman, both All-Big 12 First Team selections, earned at-large bids for the tournament. Garcia Ruiz will face Florida's No. 7 seed Rachel Gailis at 1:30 p.m. CT while Guzman takes on Vanderbilt's 9-16 seed Celia-Belle Mohr at 10:15 a.m. CT. Urrutia, who was selected as an alternate, will match up with Auburn's 9-16 seed Carolyn Ansari at 9:00 a.m. CT to complete OU's representation in the 64-player singles draw.
The third-seeded and No. 4-ranked doubles duo of Guzman and Shcherbinina will open with Celia-Belle Mohr and Anessa Lee of Vanderbilt on Tuesday at a time to be determined later. Guzman and Shcherbinina claimed two doubles titles in the fall, winning both the ITA All-American Championship and the ITA Central Regional Championship. They are 22-4 overall this season and 3-2 in dual matches, grabbing eight ranked wins.
Garcia Ruiz is currently ranked No. 37 in singles by the ITA and has been rated as high as No. 26 this season. She is 25-7 this year overall, including an 18-3 mark in dual matches, playing primarily at No. 1 singles where she was this year's Big 12 Co-Champion at the top position.
Guzman, a first-team All-Big 12 honoree in singles doubles, has been ranked as high as No. 23 this year with her current rating sitting at No. 40. She is 27-10 overall and 16-1 in dual matches, playing mostly at No. 2 where she is a perfect 10-0, but has also registered 2-0 marks at No. 3 and No. 4. She ended the season on a hot streak, winning nine-straight matches while tallying six victories against top-100 opponents.
Urrutia has missed time due to injury, but the Kentucky transfer has still been ranked as high as No. 16 in singles by the ITA this season after notching a Big 12 Fall Championship title and is currently No. 66. She is 22-12 overall and 7-7 in dual matches, mostly at No. 4 where she is 5-5. Of her 22 wins, eight have been against ranked opponents.
